Wind Takes Centre Stage Across the Archipelago
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts a generally stable but notably windy day for the Canary Islands this Sunday. The wind is set to be the main feature, particularly from the afternoon onwards, when locally very strong gusts could be recorded in several areas across the islands.
Tenerife: Gusts to Intensify in the Afternoon
In Tenerife, the day will begin with cloudy intervals in the north, where weak and scattered drizzle cannot be ruled out over mid-altitude areas during the early hours. However, as the day progresses, slightly cloudy or clear skies will prevail across most of the island, with some intervals in the south and west during the middle of the day. Temperatures will see little change, though slight drops in maximums are expected in the north and east, with small increases in minimums on the peaks. Weak frosts are possible in high areas of Mount Teide. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, thermometers will read between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius. A moderate north-easterly wind will blow, with periods of strong wind in the far northwest and the southeastern slope. It will intensify throughout the afternoon, when there is a probability of very strong gusts, especially in exposed areas.
Gran Canaria: Cloudy North, Clear Elsewhere
For Gran Canaria, the north will remain cloudy with a low probability of nocturnal drizzle, while the rest of the island will enjoy wide clear spells. The north-easterly wind will also be a key feature here, with periods of strong wind and very intense gusts on the peaks and exposed slopes.
Western Islands: Cloudy North with Afternoon Clearing
In La Palma and La Gomera, cloudy skies in the north with possible weak drizzle will repeat, opening up to clear spells during the day. The wind will blow strongly in high areas and on the eastern and western slopes. A similar situation is expected in El Hierro, with cloud in the north, clear skies elsewhere, and a moderate to strong wind, with intense gusts developing later in the day.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: Clearing Skies
Meanwhile, in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the day will start with cloudy intervals, tending to clear as the hours pass. A moderate north-easterly wind will blow with intervals of strong wind, particularly inland and in southern areas.
Maritime Conditions: Rough Seas Forecast
At sea, a north-easterly wind of force 4 to 6 is expected, locally reaching force 7. A swell will increase to a heavy swell, with a northerly ground swell of between 2 and 3 metres.
