Canary Islands Promote Tech Sector at Global Gaming Expo
The Canary Islands have taken a prominent role at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, a worldwide event of major significance and the most important trade fair of its kind held in the United States. The Canary Islands government’s agency for economic promotion, Proexca, attended to highlight the advantages the archipelago offers as a region for developing this industry. Their mission was to provide a personalised explanation of the thriving ecosystem being cultivated across the islands, which is already yielding considerable success.
Overwhelming Investor Interest in the Archipelago
Interest in the Canary Islands from investors, developers, distributors, and industry professionals has been notably high. This interest was so substantial that the schedule of meetings for the delegation doubled over the course of the event, culminating in approximately 40 encounters with major developers in the sector. For Proexca’s ‘Invest in the Canary Islands’ division, this industry is a priority, having been declared a strategic sector by the regional government.
A Strategic Focus for International Growth
In recent years, the global growth of video game companies and their impact on the world economy has become an undeniable reality. This has been a key consideration in the internationalisation strategy for the Canary Islands’ economy. The rapid evolution of the sector was clearly on display at GDC, underscoring the pressing need to adapt to its immediate changes. Since the first GDC edition in 1988, the transformation has been radical. Modern video games require multifunctional teams, live operations spanning several years, sophisticated production processes, and robust marketing strategies.
Record-Breaking Event Highlights Industry Health
This year’s edition of GDC continued to break records, featuring over 30,000 attendees, 1,000 speakers, and 700 live practical sessions. These figures demonstrate the optimal health currently enjoyed by this dynamic global industry, within which the Canary Islands are now actively seeking a leading role.
