Schools in Fuerteventura and parts of Gran Canaria move online
The Canary Islands Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sport, acting on guidance from the Directorate General for Emergencies and Civil Protection and in line with the action protocol for the education sector during periods of high temperatures, has decided to move teaching online for Tuesday, 15 September, at all schools on the island of Fuerteventura and in the Gran Canaria municipalities of Agüimes, Artenara, Ingenio, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, La Aldea de San Nicolás, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Telde and Valsequillo, ahead of the episode of extreme heat forecast for the day.
Remote teaching will therefore be applied in all lessons where this is possible, in accordance with the measures set out for situations of this kind.
Preventive measures for the remaining islands and municipalities
The Ministry notes that at schools on the remaining islands and municipalities, it is reminding the education community to follow the preventive measures for periods of high temperatures set out in the protocol, with particular attention to vulnerable pupils. These measures include staying for as long as possible in cool, shaded or air-conditioned places; reducing physical activity and avoiding outdoor sport, especially during the hottest hours; ensuring frequent hydration; and adapting the spaces used for lessons to find those offering the best conditions for thermal comfort.
Also envisaged are longer breaks for hydration, the proper use of ventilation systems, keeping blinds down when there is direct sunlight, and providing information and recommendations to the education community.
Early pick-ups and changes to the school day
The Ministry said in a statement that school management teams may ask the relevant regional or island education directorates to apply the extraordinary measures provided for in the protocol: early departure of pupils or changes to the school timetable and curricular activities. In the case of early departure for underage pupils, this will be optional, cannot take place before 12:00 and must have the authorisation of their legal representatives. Pupils who remain at the school will be looked after in line with their teaching timetable, while canteen and transport services will keep their usual schedules.
Measures for the following days will be communicated in line with how temperatures develop and the guidance of the relevant authorities. The Ministry recommends that the entire education community follows updates through the official channels of the Canary Islands government and heeds the guidance of the emergency services at all times.
