Canary Islands property prices surge as sales slump across Spain
Home sales in Spain fell 11.1% in July, chaining together seven consecutive months of decline, while prices rose 7.7%. In the Canary Islands, that increase reached 18.8%, with mortgages down 7.9%, moderating their previous rate of growth, according to data from the General Council of Notaries.
Mortgages retreat amid a shortage of available stock
Nationwide, mortgages taken out to purchase a home fell by almost 5% compared with July of the previous year, in a context marked by a lack of available stock to meet demand — a situation that is driving up prices and worsening access difficulties, according to the notaries.
These figures follow June’s data, when home transactions dipped 4%, prices climbed 8.8% and mortgages rose slightly, by 0.2% year-on-year. With this latest adjustment, home sales have now been in negative territory for seven months: January (-11.4%); February (-7.7%); March (-4.7%); April (-10.2%); May (-11.8%); June (-4%) and July (-11.1%).
