Minister Confirms Airport Negotiations for Canary Islands
Ángel Víctor Torres, Spain’s Minister for Territorial Policy, has stated that the Canary Islands Government can aim for an agreement on airports similar to the one established with the Basque Country. He clarified that what the State has approved with Euskadi is “not co-management” of the airports, but rather a bilateral body with equal representation that grants the regional government greater capacity.
Path to a New Agreement
“The Canary Islands can certainly aspire to that. The start of negotiations has been requested, and we will have the first technical meetings in the coming weeks. This is the process followed with all those requesting specific actions,” Minister Torres said this Tuesday in an interview with Radio Canaria.
Clarification on Co-Management Claims
However, Torres was keen to emphasise and reiterate that it is “not true” that any co-management of airports has been approved with any autonomous community. “The Government of Spain sits at a table with regional governments respecting the Constitution, the Statutes of Autonomy of each region, and, of course, everything related to basic state law,” he concluded.
