Spain thanks Mexico for swift action over Canarian student’s murder

The attorney general of Morelos, Fernando Blumenkron Escobar, told the media that he will seek the maximum sentence, namely 70 years in prison. Blumenkron added that the motive for the crime could have been robbery, but that the state prosecutor’s office is arguing for femicide, and that if the judge considers it as such, the suspect will be prosecuted on that basis, although they will wait to hear what the defence says at the hearing, given that there is evidence against the detainee.

The prosecutor’s office is submitting video surveillance footage and other technical and scientific evidence to secure a conviction. “We are going to seek the maximum sentence, which is 70 years,” the prosecutor stated. Asked whether there had been any remorse, he said: “We do not have that information and we will see what the defence says before the judge.”

Family arrives to identify the 21-year-old’s body

During the afternoon, several members of the family of the 21-year-old woman arrived at the state prosecutor’s office to carry out the corresponding identification, accompanied by Spain’s consul in Mexico, Marcos Rodríguez, sources at the state prosecutor’s office told EFE.

Mexican authorities detained the suspected perpetrator on Thursday night. He was wanted over the murder of the young student, who was stabbed on Saturday in the municipality of Cuautla, in the state of Morelos in central Mexico.

Mexico’s Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, announced the arrest of the suspect on Thursday night in a message on X, in which he included a photograph of the detainee. According to sources familiar with the case who spoke to EFE, the arrest took place in Cuautla, the scene of the crime, located 120 kilometres south of Mexico City.

Arrest follows five-day manhunt

The detention, announced five days after the crime, came less than 30 hours after the Morelos prosecutor’s office issued a wanted notice and arrest warrant on Wednesday for the suspect, named as the probable perpetrator of the crime of femicide.

García Harfuch said the arrest was the result of coordinated efforts to track down the suspected killer, with officers from various institutions taking part in the operation, including the Navy, the National Guard, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Morelos prosecutor’s office and state authorities. Finally, the official stressed that the prevention of femicides is a priority for the Mexican government.
