Calima to Persist Across Canary Islands Until Tuesday

Yellow Warning for Calima Across All Islands

The hazy skies caused by calima, or Saharan dust, will continue to affect Tenerife and the entire Canary Islands until Tuesday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has decided to keep a yellow weather warning active, as suspended dust will reduce visibility across the archipelago to around 3,000 metres.

Unseasonably Warm Temperatures

Furthermore, Tuesday is forecast to be unusually warm for this time of year. According to Aemet’s forecast, maximum temperatures could reach up to 25°C, with minimums around 19°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro all remain under a yellow warning due to the widespread calima.

Areas Most Affected by Reduced Visibility

Aemet details that the reduction in visibility will be especially noticeable in areas most exposed to the east and south-easterly airflow. On the islands with higher terrain, the dust will initially affect mid-altitude areas before spreading towards coastal zones. The calima will have a greater impact on the eastern and southern slopes of the mountainous islands, where the concentration of suspended particles may be higher. This type of situation is common when Saharan air reaches the Canary Islands.

Forecast for Tuesday 24 February

Looking ahead to Tuesday 24 February, the forecast points to clear skies with the presence of calima across all islands. Some cloudy intervals could develop during the afternoon or late in the day in the north of the western islands. As for temperatures, few changes or a slight drop are expected, which will be more pronounced in the minimum temperatures on La Palma.

Wind Conditions and Coastal Alerts

The wind will blow from the east, ranging from light to moderate. However, it will tend to shift to a northerly direction from midday and throughout the afternoon in the western islands. In the eastern islands, the change will occur later in the day. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, intervals of strong south-easterly wind are forecast, particularly in inland areas and on the west coasts.
