Arrecife’s El Reducto Beach to Stay Shut Over Easter

Political storm as Arrecife’s main beach stays closed for Easter

The Socialist PSOE party on Lanzarote has launched a fierce attack this Sunday against Arrecife’s mayor, Yonathan de León of the Popular Party (PP). They have denounced the continued closure of the capital’s main beach, El Reducto, to bathers during the Easter holiday period. The beach has been shut since 14 October last year due to a problem with faecal sewage discharges.

A “flagrant example of abandonment”

In a statement, the socialists held the capital’s mayor responsible for a situation they consider “a flagrant example of abandonment, incompetence and absolute contempt for the city.” The PSOE emphasised that the closure has now extended through every key period for the local economy: the Constitution Day long weekend, Christmas, Carnival, and now Easter. They argue that this is a date when the city fills with cruise ship tourists, and the island’s Socialist Party believes visitors are witnessing this “disgrace,” taking away a dreadful memory of our capital.

Economic damage and political failure alleged

“They have been incapable of resolving the problem at any of the most important moments of the year, causing enormous economic damage to businesses and to the tourist image,” they stated. The socialist spokesperson on Arrecife Town Council, Cristina Duque, has demanded the immediate reopening of the beach. She warned that “if in six months they haven’t been capable of fixing it, the problem isn’t technical, it’s political. And it has responsible parties with full names and surnames,” Duque asserted.
