The Canary Islands wake up to a dustier picture this Sunday, with calima thickening over the eastern islands and temperatures creeping up across the board. The south of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria could reach 34C inland, while northern coasts remain under cloud.

General conditions

Calima sits lightly at altitude over the western islands, but becomes far more noticeable in the mid-altitudes and high ground of the eastern ones. Daytime temperatures are rising slightly, and the trade winds will blow moderately along the coasts, turning stronger in the southeast and northwest where occasional very strong gusts are possible. On the summits, expect a moderate south-westerly wind.

At sea, combined ocean swell from the north-northeast will bring waves above 1.5 metres to north-facing coasts and the western shorelines of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Southern coasts will see rougher ocean conditions.

Tenerife

Cloudy intervals across the north, with the odd drop of rain possible in the mid-altitudes. Skies should clear around midday. Calima will be most noticeable in the mid-altitudes and on the summits. Local clouds may build inland and in the northeast, with a small chance of an isolated shower. Coastal trade winds will be moderate, with a south-westerly breeze over the high summits. Expect 30C in the southern lowlands, while Santa Cruz ranges between 23C and 29C.

Gran Canaria

Scattered clouds in the north, with a chance of the odd drop of rain. Elsewhere, mostly clear skies apart from high cloud during the morning. Calima will be present, especially in the mid-altitudes and mountains. Moderate trade winds, stronger in the southeast and west. The south, southeast and west could reach 32C, with 34C possible in spots. Las Palmas will see 23C to 27C.

Lanzarote

High cloud during the morning, giving way to clear skies. Calima will be more intense in the higher areas. Moderate trade winds, with temperatures reaching or exceeding 32C in the southeast. Arrecife will range between 22C and 30C.

Fuerteventura

Clear skies, apart from morning intervals of high cloud. Calima will be more significant at altitude. Moderate trade winds, with 32C in the west and up to 34C locally in the southern interior. Puerto del Rosario will see 22C to 29C.

La Palma

Cloudy in the northeast, with the chance of an occasional drop of rain, clearing around midday. Elsewhere, mostly clear. Light calima at altitude. Moderate coastal trade winds, turning strong south-westerly in the Caldera de Taburiente. Santa Cruz de La Palma will top out around 26C.

La Gomera

Scattered clouds in the north. The rest of the island stays mostly clear with light calima at altitude. Moderate coastal trade winds, strong at times in the southeast and west. Southern coasts could reach 30C, while San Sebastián will range between 24C and 29C.

El Hierro

Scattered clouds in the north, clear elsewhere. Light calima at altitude. Moderate trade winds, stronger in the low-lying areas of the southeast. Temperatures will hold steady with no major changes.

La Graciosa
