Initiative questions La Rajita hotel project
The spokesperson and island councillor for Iniciativa por La Gomera (IxLG), AarΓ³n RodrΓguez Ramos, asked the ASG governing group at the Cabildo de La Gomera, during the last ordinary plenary session on 18 September 2026, for its assessment of the hotel project planned in La Rajita, in the municipality of Vallehermoso, and how it fits with the sustainable tourism model that is supposedly being promoted and proposed for La Gomera.
In a statement, the party explains that the question comes while the urban planning process for the La Rajita Special Plan continues on the part of the local council. In July 2026, the public information period for the document was opened, with the aim of establishing a hotel with 368 tourist beds.
Cabildo investment in the area
The party also points out that the Cabildo has just acted in the area by resurfacing around 60 parking spaces and carrying out work on the final 400 metres of the road, after years without any investment. Iniciativa por La Gomera (IxLG) laments this kind of Γ la carte urban planning designed to smooth the arrival of a mega-hotel in an area such as La Rajita, while residents of La Dama still do not even have a wastewater treatment plant.
Environmental concerns raised
The party also warns that the project must be subject to an environmental assessment because of its proximity to a Natura 2000 site, the nearby Orone Special Area of Conservation (ZEC), the Acantilados de AlajerΓ³ Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and other protected marine areas.
RodrΓguez Ramos asked what assessment ASG at the Cabildo makes of the hotel project and, in particular, whether it considers its characteristics and dimensions to be compatible with the tourism model for La Gomera, “which the island administration boasts of defining as sustainable at international trade fairs and in various tourism promotion campaigns”, he says.
‘Not compatible with sustainable tourism’
“It does not seem logical to talk about sustainable tourism when the same tourist developments as on the capital islands, with hundreds and hundreds of tourist beds, are being encouraged, even less so when our island is not characterised by the existence of these large complexes,” explains the spokesperson for Iniciativa por La Gomera (IxLG).
The party states that ASG has no environmental, territorial, social or economic criteria when it comes to planning a sustainable tourism model on the island, thereby putting coexistence and the image of the destination at risk.
