Marine pollution pre-alert activated in Arrecife

The Directorate General for Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government activated a pre-alert situation on Tuesday following an episode of marine pollution after the tuna fishing boat Monte Arballu sank in the port of Arrecife, in Lanzarote. The fishing vessel, which was moored at the Naos cruise ship quay, was carrying approximately 10,000 litres of diesel. Following the incident, a fuel slick measuring around 30 by 15 metres was detected.

Emergency plans triggered as barriers deployed

The Port Authority of Las Palmas activated the Interior Maritime Plan (PIM) at 1.05pm, in its emergency phase. As part of the operation deployed following the sinking of the Monte Arballu, two anti-pollution barriers were installed with the aim of containing the spilled fuel. Subsequently, at 1.27pm, the Maritime Captaincy activated the National Maritime Plan (PMN) in its alert phase.

In addition to these measures, the PLATECA plan has been activated, which will make it possible to reinforce monitoring of the emergency, improve coordination between the different administrations and bodies involved, and guarantee the preventive availability of resources.

Focus on refloating the sunken vessel

Operations are also centred on the sunken fishing boat. Due to the shallow depth of the area, those in charge of the operation are assessing and developing various actions aimed at its possible refloating. The evolution of the fuel slick and the condition of the Monte Arballu will determine the next steps of the emergency operation.

For the time being, Emergencies reports that the fuel detected remains contained within the barriers deployed in the Port of Arrecife. The PLATECA will remain in a pre-alert situation to guarantee monitoring and coordination of the episode while work continues on the fishing boat and on controlling the marine pollution.
