The Canary Islands have endured another night dominated by oppressive heat, with minimum temperatures remaining above 30C at several points across the archipelago. In fact, the three highest minimum temperatures recorded in Spain on Thursday were all registered in the islands, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura lead the way
The highest overnight temperature was recorded in Agaete, in Gran Canaria, where the thermometer did not drop below 31.2C. Also in Gran Canaria, the Agaete-Suerte Alta station registered a minimum of 30.9C, while in PƔjara, in Fuerteventura, the minimum temperature was 30.1C.
These figures reflect the persistence of the heat across the archipelago, particularly during the night-time hours, when temperatures continued to be very high at certain points on the islands.
Canary Islands records stand out nationally
The Canary Islands readings stand out especially when compared with the rest of the country. Agaete recorded the highest minimum temperature in the whole of Spain, at 31.2C, followed by Agaete-Suerte Alta, with 30.9C, and PƔjara, with 30.1C.
Meanwhile, the heat also left very high daytime temperatures in other parts of Spain. One in six AEMET stations, around 150 in total, reached or exceeded 35C on Thursday. The highest maximums were concentrated in Andalusia and Extremadura. El Granado (Huelva) reached 39.6C, Tablada (Seville) hit 39.5C and Badajoz registered 39.1C.
Relief in sight as temperatures set to fall
Despite the high temperatures recorded, AEMET forecasts that the thermometers will begin to fall over the coming days, including in the Canary Islands. The drop will gradually bring relief from the heat, although temperatures will continue to dominate the agenda in the archipelago after a day in which several Canary Islands stations registered exceptionally high overnight values.
September 2026 set to be hottest on record
The spell of heat comes, moreover, in the context of exceptionally high temperatures across Spain as a whole. AEMET considers it practically certain that September 2026 will be the hottest September in the historical series, which began in 1961.
With the data observed up to 22 September and the temperatures forecast until the 30th, the agency calculates that the average temperature for September will be 22.4C, that is, 3.3C above normal. AEMET highlights that this average temperature would even be higher than the average recorded during the meteorological summer in Spain, which stands at 22.1C.
The agency has noted that, given its temperatures, September 2026 could practically be considered an extra summer month. In the Canary Islands, meanwhile, the focus remains on overnight temperatures, with values that on Thursday once again exceeded 30C at certain points across the archipelago.
