The first days of autumn feel anything but autumnal. Thursday is set to be the hottest day of the current episode, with the thermometer already above 36°C in parts of Fuerteventura. Calima stays with us across the Islands, and the heat will only ease gradually from Friday onwards.
General conditions
Skies will be mostly clear across the eastern province, while the western islands see far more cloud – mainly mid and high cloud. A stray shower is not ruled out in La Palma, and some local cloud build-up is possible around Teide in Tenerife. Calima will linger everywhere, softening the light and blurring the horizon.
The wind will be light for much of the day before picking up again in the evening, blowing from the southeast. On the water, expect rough seas along north-facing coasts with waves around 1.5 metres, and choppier conditions to the south.
Tenerife
Humidity drops and patches of uniform high cloud drift overhead, with a small chance of a light shower. Temperatures range from 25°C to 35°C in Santa Cruz.
Gran Canaria
The capital stays warm overnight, with minimums no lower than 24°C and daytime highs around 30°C. Inland in the south, the mercury could climb to 38°C. High cloud and calima throughout.
Lanzarote
A hot day, with Arrecife ranging from 24°C to 32°C and inland areas possibly reaching 36°C. No cloud expected, but calima remains.
Fuerteventura
Southeast winds will accelerate along the west of the island in the afternoon. Clear skies are expected. Inland temperatures could hit 38°C, with around 30°C in the capital.
La Palma
The sky will be greyer than blue, and a few light showers may fall during the day. Minimum temperatures rise noticeably, with Santa Cruz de La Palma going from 23°C to 30°C.
La Gomera
Warmer than recent days, with values between 25°C and 33°C in San Sebastián. Plenty of high cloud and calima. The wind strengthens in the afternoon.
El Hierro
Abundant mid and high cloud, plus calima. Cloud will move in from south to north. In Valverde, temperatures range from 22°C to 28°C.
La Graciosa
Mostly clear skies with calima softening the horizon, though less dense than in recent days. Temperatures similar to recent readings, hovering around 30°C in Caleta de Sebo.
Outlook
The heat will ease from Friday, but only gradually. Until then, take care in the sun, stay hydrated and keep an eye on those most vulnerable to the heat and dust.
