After the latest spell of heat and calima across the Canary Islands in recent weeks, with temperatures exceeding 40C in some parts of the archipelago, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting light rain and a widespread drop in temperatures for the coming days, with maximums falling notably in inland areas on Thursday and Friday.

The cooldown will not be a dramatic one (except in inland and highland areas), unlike what is expected across the rest of Spain, although the heat will certainly ease somewhat. Maximum temperatures in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, however, will continue to hover around 30C.

Aemet highlights a widespread drop in temperatures as the most significant feature of the day, with the decline particularly notable in maximums in inland areas. Skies will be cloudy in the north of the mountainous islands, where occasional light rain is likely in inland and highland areas. Elsewhere, skies will be mostly clear, with some cloudy intervals during the second half of the day in the west of Tenerife and the south of Gran Canaria. Intervals of cloud are expected in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The trade winds will blow with occasional strong gusts, and very strong gusts cannot be ruled out at times on the south-eastern and north-western slopes of the mountainous islands. On the summits, winds will be light to moderate from the north. Minimum and maximum temperatures: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 24-28C; Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 24-26C.

Friday

Cloudy intervals in general, with predominantly cloudy skies in the north, where light and occasional rainfall is forecast. Temperatures will fall slightly, more noticeably in maximums in inland areas of the central islands. Moderate north-easterly winds, occasionally strong on the south-eastern and north-western slopes, with sea breezes prevailing on the south-western coasts of the mountainous islands. On the summits, winds will be light to moderate from the north. Minimum and maximum temperatures: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 23-28C; Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 22-26C.

Saturday

Cloudy intervals, with predominantly cloudy skies and a chance of occasional rain in the north of the mountainous islands during the first half of the day. Temperatures will remain unchanged or rise slightly. Moderate north-easterly winds, becoming light to moderate as the day progresses, with sea breezes on the south-western coasts. Minimum and maximum temperatures: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 23-29C; Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 23-27C.

Sunday

Cloudy in the north of the mountainous islands, tending towards cloudy intervals during the middle of the day, with light and occasional rainfall possible in inland and highland areas during the first half of the day. Elsewhere, skies will be mostly clear, with some intervals of cloud in the early hours in the easternmost islands. Temperatures will remain unchanged or rise slightly, more noticeably in maximums in inland areas of the central islands. Light to moderate north-easterly winds, strengthening towards the end of the day. On the summits, light winds of variable direction, with sea breezes on the south-western coasts.
