Tenerife braces for rising temperatures

The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert situation for maximum temperatures across the entire archipelago from 11:00 on Monday 14 September, based on information provided by Aemet and other sources and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Where the heat will hit hardest in Tenerife
In Tenerife, the highest temperatures will be concentrated particularly in the mid-altitude and highland areas of the south and west, as well as in some parts of the metropolitan area. Emergency services expect between 32°C and 33°C to be reached in these spots during Monday.
The heat could intensify even further during Tuesday. By then a further rise in temperatures is expected, with local values of up to 35°C in the mid-altitude areas of the south and up to 36°C on the southern side of the metropolitan area. The Directorate-General for Emergencies is continuing to monitor the evolution of this episode and has not ruled out updating its forecasts depending on how weather conditions develop.
Calima to sweep across the islands
Tenerife will see mainly lightly cloudy or clear skies this Monday, although some cloudy intervals are expected in coastal areas during the first half of the day. As for the wind, along the coasts of Tenerife it will blow lightly from the north, with a predominance of sea breezes, while in inland areas it will be light to moderate from the south.
How the heat will affect the other islands
The heat episode will equally affect the rest of the archipelago, although with differing intensity depending on the island. In Gran Canaria, maximum temperatures will rise slightly, with a moderate increase in the low-lying and mid-altitude areas, especially on the south- and west-facing slopes. Values could reach 34°C in some spots.
In Lanzarote, minimum temperatures will rise slightly and could remain above 25°C overnight. Maximum temperatures will see a moderate and notable rise inland, where they could reach or exceed 34°C. In Fuerteventura, maximum temperatures will also rise moderately and notably in inland areas, with the possibility of reaching or exceeding 34°C.
In La Gomera, temperatures will change little in the south and will rise slightly in the north, especially the maximums. Inland areas are expected to see values of between 30°C and 33°C, with the possibility of locally reaching 34°C.
In La Palma, skies will be lightly cloudy or clear, except for some cloudy intervals in coastal areas during the first half of the day. Calima will also be present. Temperatures will change little and reach 30°C in inland areas. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, values of between 23°C and 29°C are expected.
In El Hierro, the situation will be similar, with lightly cloudy or clear skies and cloudy intervals along the coasts during the first half of the day. Calima will also affect the island. Temperatures will change little and could reach 30°C in inland areas.
Wind and sea conditions
Across the Canary Islands as a whole, the wind will blow from the north and north-east at force 3 to 5, although in some areas intensities will be force 3 or 4.
