Canary Islands journalists among Spain’s most influential tourism voices
At a time when the fight against misinformation is intensifying, journalism has one of its strongest cards to play in defending one of its core values: the ability to distinguish between information, opinion and fake news. This need is particularly evident in the Canary Islands, where tourism sits at the epicentre of an intense social debate about the development model, pressure on the territory and so-called tourism-phobia. It is for this reason that recognition of specialised journalism takes on greater significance. Two Canary Islands journalists are among the ten most influential tourism professionals in Spain, according to a list that analyses various factors related to media impact, specialisation, journalistic rigour, influence within the business sector and institutional recognition.
Ignacio Moll, Miguel Ángel González Suárez and Michel Jorge Millares occupy third, eighth and tenth place respectively in a ranking headed by some of the best-known names in Spanish tourism and travel journalism.
Third place: Ignacio Moll de Alba
Moll de Alba takes this position thanks to his track record in economic journalism, B2B analysis and coverage of the global tourism industry. Added to this is his role as founder of Tourinews, one of the sector’s professional information platforms with the greatest international reach.
Eighth place: Miguel Ángel González Suárez
Miguel Ángel González Suárez takes eighth place in recognition of his career in institutional journalism, specialised radio and the international promotion of destinations. Alongside this work is his responsibility at the helm of FIJET Spain, an organisation he presides over and through which he drives rigorous analysis of the tourism industry and represents the Spanish specialised press at major international forums.
Tenth place: Michel Jorge Millares
Millares, for his part, has been recognised for his work in historical dissemination and research, particularly linked to heritage and the evolution of tourism. A career that has made him a benchmark in the study of the origins and development of the tourism industry. His presence in this top 10 places the Canary Islands, also from the journalistic sphere, on a national map in which tourism communication plays an increasingly relevant role. Especially in a territory where explaining tourism, its benefits, its contradictions and its challenges requires knowledge, context and critical capacity.
Michel Jorge Millares: a career devoted to tourism history and heritage
A journalism graduate from the Complutense University of Madrid and holder of a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Michel Jorge Millares has built much of his career around the history, heritage and evolution of tourism in the Canary Islands. His work combines journalism with research, dissemination and the recovery of the memory of an industry that has profoundly transformed the Islands.
Throughout his career he has taken part in some of the main events linked to the tourism history of Gran Canaria. He was curator of the 50th anniversary of Maspalomas Costa Canaria, of World Tourism Day held in Maspalomas alongside the World Tourism Organization in 2012, of the 50th anniversary of the Atlantic Fair and of the 40th anniversary of the Gran Canaria Tourist Board. He was also one of the driving forces behind the Maspalomas Costa Canaria International Tourism Forum, which he directed for seven editions between 2012 and 2021.
His dissemination work extends to books, guides, tourism portals, exhibitions and documentaries. Among the latter, those dedicated to the history of the Gran Canaria Centre for Initiatives and Tourism and to the 50 years of the Provincial Tourist Board, now Turismo de Gran Canaria, stand out. He is also the author of educational materials on the culture and identity of the islands, including the manuals Pancho Guerra y el humor isleño and El turismo en Gran Canaria. In 2011 he launched the blog Islas Bienaventuradas, a space dedicated to disseminating the history and heritage of the Canary Islands that came to host around 500 articles and more than 600,000 reads. Following a technical problem, he later moved part of this dissemination work to his personal website.
His connection with the tourism sector also has a family and institutional dimension. He currently sits on the board of the Gran Canaria Centre for Initiatives and Tourism, an entity he has been linked to since the 1990s.
Ignacio Moll de Alba: from industry insider to specialist publisher
An economist, communicator and someone who knows the tourism industry from the inside, Ignacio Moll de Alba has built an unusual career in specialised journalism. Before becoming an editor and journalist, he spent more than a decade in a professional career directly linked to the tourism sector, with responsibilities at TUI Group and the Gran Canaria Tourist Board. That experience as an industry professional would later shape his understanding of tourism communication.
His leap into the media came via Editorial Prensa Ibérica, before he launched his own project in 2015 with the creation of Tourinews. Born in the Canary Islands, the digital newspaper specialised from the outset in tourism information aimed at professionals, companies and institutions, with a clear international vocation. It currently publishes content on the tourism industry in seven languages: Spanish, English, German, French, Turkish, Italian and Chinese.
At the helm of Tourinews, Moll de Alba has promoted a communication model that combines daily news with industry analysis and a growing international dimension. His project has also extended to other media and professional platforms, including Bungalow 103, MyTJob and Soleando, shaping a communication ecosystem specialised in tourism.
His activity is not limited to editing. Moll de Alba regularly takes part in forums, conferences and professional gatherings, where he addresses issues related to the evolution of the tourism industry and its main challenges. He has also developed a long radio career at the helm of Bungalow 103, a tourism-specialised programme broadcast weekly on Capital Radio.
The business dimension of his work has not distracted him from journalistic activity. On the contrary, his profile sits precisely at that meeting point between journalism, communication and knowledge of the industry, a position that has allowed him to turn Tourinews into one of the benchmark specialised publications for the Spanish tourism sector, with growing international reach. The outlet was also recognised in 2024 with the Canary Islands Government’s Tourism Excellence Award. A career that explains his regular presence in the main lists of influential professionals in Spanish tourism. The consultancy SERGESTUR already placed him in 2023 among the heads of specialised media with the greatest influence in the sector, and subsequent editions of its ranking have maintained his presence among the benchmark professionals.
Miguel Ángel González Suárez: journalism, analysis and international projection
A native of Puerto de la Cruz, Miguel Ángel González Suárez has made tourism the axis of a professional career that combines journalism, analysis, communication and institutional management. A doctor specialising in tourism structure, he has developed much of his career linked to the tourism industry and its dissemination, both through the media and through various professional and academic responsibilities.
Since 2018 he has presided over FIJET Spain, the World Federation of Tourism Journalists and Writers, a responsibility for which he was re-elected by acclamation in 2024. Before reaching the presidency he had held the organisation’s vice-presidency, and he also represents it internationally. From this position he has promoted exchanges between specialised journalists and the international projection of Spanish tourism.
His journalistic activity currently takes place at the helm of Turiscom and as general director of La Diez Capital Radio, media outlets from which he addresses tourism news, destinations, the sector’s economy and the major transformations affecting the industry. His recent output also maintains a marked international vocation, with analysis and reports on destinations, transport, trends and new tourism models.
His career also includes a research and dissemination dimension. In 2007 he published Turismo Enlatado, a work of critical analysis of the tourism industry that already addressed issues such as changing consumer habits, the expansion of the internet, low-cost airlines and the sector’s structural changes. The work reflects one of the constants of his career: observing tourism beyond the destination and analysing the economic and social forces transforming it.
Alongside his journalistic work, he has extensive experience in the management and direct knowledge of the sector, with responsibilities in public administration and private enterprise, as well as teaching activity and participation as a speaker at national and international congresses. He also maintains a close connection with the tourism organisations of the Canary Islands.
In recent years, his work has incorporated gastronomy with particular force as part of tourism and cultural heritage. In January 2026 he received a distinction from the Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy for his work in spreading Ibero-American culinary culture, a recognition that highlights the international dimension of his activity as a specialised communicator.
With more than a decade of presence in the international field of tourism journalism and a career closely tied to the Canary Islands, González Suárez represents a profile in which tourism information blends with industry analysis, cultural promotion and the defence of specialised journalism. A combination that explains his inclusion among the leading figures of Spanish tourism communication.
