Tenerife set for a hot and hazy Sunday
Sunday will bring a fresh rise in temperatures across Tenerife, with the thermometer set to climb above 30C in various parts of the island. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting a day marked by calima, particularly in the mid-altitude areas and high ground, while skies will remain largely clear or only slightly cloudy.
Santa Cruz to reach 32C
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is expected to see a minimum of 24C and a maximum of 32C, although the capital will not be the only place where high readings are recorded. Forecasters say it is likely that temperatures will exceed 30C in the south-east-facing mid-altitude areas and, in particular, in the low-lying areas of the south-east of the metropolitan area. The rise in the mercury will be slight to moderate, making itself felt above all in the mid-altitude areas and at higher altitudes. Minimum temperatures will also edge upwards in some spots.
Cloudy spells in the north, clearer skies elsewhere
Sky conditions will vary depending on which side of the island you are on. The low-lying areas of northern Tenerife will see cloudy intervals during the early hours, with clearer spells gaining ground through the middle of the day. Across the rest of the island, skies will be mostly clear or only slightly cloudy, although some cloud may build in the south during the afternoon.
Calima to settle over the high ground
Calima will affect mainly the mid-altitude areas and high ground of Tenerife, and the phenomenon will also be present across much of the archipelago during the day. Winds will blow from the north-east, light to moderate in low-lying areas, while an easterly component will dominate at higher altitudes. The conditions could contribute to a warmer feel in certain parts of the island.
Gran Canaria could hit 34C
The rise in temperatures will also extend to the rest of the Canary Islands, with Gran Canaria among those set to register the highest readings. Maximums will exceed 30C in the high ground and mid-altitude areas of the south, and locally reaching 34C cannot be ruled out. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is expected to see a minimum of 24C and a maximum of 28C.
Rough seas around the islands
Across the archipelago as a whole, winds will blow from the north and north-east at force 5 or 6, occasionally reaching force 7 at sea. Rough or very rough seas are expected, while along the southern and south-western coasts of the islands winds will be weaker and more variable, at force 1 to 3, with smooth seas. There will also be groundswell from the north or north-east, with waves of between one and two metres.
