Nine designers and brands from the Canary Islands are set to showcase their talent and creative diversity at one of Spain’s major international fashion events, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW), in Madrid on 17 September. For the Canary Islands Government, this participation represents a “strategic opportunity” which, promoted by Proexca, will help project the islands’ fashion sector to one of Europe’s key markets and consolidate their positioning as a hub for fashion creation and production.
A landmark moment for Canarian fashion
According to Alfonso Cabello, president of Proexca, taking part in MBFW “is an extraordinary opportunity” that confirms the work carried out in the fashion sector in recent years, in collaboration with all the island councils, to approach “Canarian fashion from a position of unity and from an industrial perspective that favours the internationalisation of its professionals and businesses”. The presence in Madrid, he added, represents “a coming-out party for our fashion” with a proposal that seeks to showcase the richness of the different islands and a distinctive creative identity.
“The Canary Islands had to be there, and this platform allows us to make a difference not only in what we do, but also in our accent, in a creative identity built from many perspectives that has enormous potential in the islands, already representing around 3% of the Canary Islands’ GDP and generating activity, employment and professional opportunities,” he explained.
Beyond beachwear and sunshine
The regional government adds that the Canarian presence at MBFW offers organisers a chance to champion the diversity of the islands’ creativity and move beyond the traditional association of the Canary Islands with swimwear, summer or tourism, revealing a much broader ecosystem instead. Rubén Gómez, the project’s creative director, stresses that the aim is “to show Spain and the world what is happening in the Canarian creative scene” – a movement that transcends fashion and also connects with disciplines such as music and other artistic expressions.
Gómez explains that the selection of designers allows for the construction of a common narrative around the quality of design that exists on each of the islands, showcasing fashion based on fine craftsmanship, pattern-cutting and refinement, but also on trends, urban style and nightlife and festive wear. This diversity, he says, reflects a creative scene that has been steadily consolidating across the islands and which finds in its own roots one of its main tools for differentiation. “Canarian identity, far from being a limitation, thus becomes an asset for internationalisation,” the regional government points out.
A platform for growth and collaboration
The participation of nine Canarian designers and brands will bring to Madrid a range of different approaches to fashion creation developed across the islands. The project focuses both on the trajectory and professionalisation of its participants and on the new generations, as well as the sector’s capacity to generate competitive proposals. The presence at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid also represents a meeting point with professionals, buyers, media and industry agents, opening up new possibilities for collaboration and positioning for the participating brands.
