A gusty day ahead
The trade winds are back in the driving seat across the Canary Islands. After some already strong gusts on Monday – topping 100 km/h in parts of La Gomera – the wind will remain the main story on Tuesday, especially during the afternoon.
The strongest gusts are expected on the north-western and south-eastern flanks of the more mountainous islands, as well as across Tenerife’s metropolitan area and the central and southern parts of the eastern islands. Up high, a thin layer of calima will linger, dulling the sunshine a little.
Cloud cover will be limited. Most clouds will sit around the 1,000-metre mark on northern slopes and are likely to thin out as the day goes on, particularly over Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Temperatures and the Atlantic
Both daytime highs and overnight lows could dip by a degree or two compared to recent days. Still, it will remain warm in the south, with parts of central and southern Gran Canaria reaching 32 to 34°C.
At sea, conditions will be rough to very rough. Northern coasts will face a rough ocean, while southern shores will see a slightly choppy Atlantic. In the channels between islands, waves could reach up to two metres, driven by the strong winds.
Island by island
Tenerife
Cloud cover will be minimal – just some low cloud on the northern side. Elsewhere, expect sunshine with a light calima haze above. Temperatures in Santa Cruz will range from 23 to 29°C. The wind will pick up, especially in the metropolitan area.
Gran Canaria
Gusts could exceed 80 km/h in the west and south-east. Cloudy intervals are likely on the north coast, while the rest of the island will see sunshine filtered through calima. It will feel hot in the south.
Lanzarote
Afternoon gusts of around 70 km/h are expected in the centre and south. Scattered clouds on the north and west coasts will gradually clear. Highs in Arrecife will hit 29°C.
Fuerteventura
The trade winds will remain active, particularly in the south around the Jandía peninsula. Cloud cover will be scarce, with a few patches in the west. Temperatures in the capital will sit between 21 and 28°C.
La Palma
Clouds will form in the north and east, leaving the rest of the island mostly clear and with less calima. Strong trade winds will blow across the exposed tips. Temperatures will be similar to recent days.
La Gomera
Strong gusts will continue in the usual wind-prone areas. Cloud cover will be limited to the north. In San Sebastián, temperatures will range from 23 to 28°C.
El Hierro
A mostly sunny day with just a few scattered clouds early and late. A light calima haze will hang in the air. Temperatures in Valverde will stay cool, between 17 and 20°C.
La Graciosa
Scattered clouds at dawn and dusk, otherwise plenty of sunshine with a light calima layer. Winds will occasionally pick up, affecting sea conditions. Temperatures will be similar to the other eastern islands.
Looking ahead
The trade wind pattern is expected to persist over the coming days, keeping the islands mostly dry but breezy. Stay cautious if you’re heading into exposed mountain areas, and remember that the ocean will be lively on northern and exposed coasts.
