Tuesday: strong trade winds and patchy drizzle

The Azores High continues to dominate the weather picture on the Islands this Tuesday, funnelling a brisk and gusty trade wind across the archipelago. Cloud will pile up against northern slopes, and a few isolated spots may even see a light shower, but plenty of sunshine is on offer elsewhere.

General conditions

The temperature inversion – the cap that traps the sea of clouds – sits between 800 and 1,000 metres, limiting cloud cover to the northern faces up to about 1,200 metres. That means mostly clear skies and warm conditions on southern coasts and central areas.

Temperatures will push towards 30°C in several spots during the midday and early afternoon. The northeast trade wind will blow moderate to strong, with gusts locally exceeding 60–70 km/h, particularly in the southeast and northwest of the bigger islands.

At sea, the Atlantic will kick up. The trade wind registers force 5–6, with local patches of force 7 between the islands. Expect rough ocean conditions and an ocean swell from the open Atlantic of 1–2 metres. On most beaches and swimming areas, waves will reach or top the 2-metre mark – take care if you’re heading for a dip.

Island by island

Tenerife

Sunshine across most of the island, but the north will sit under a sea of clouds below 1,000–1,200 metres. Light drizzle is possible on the mid-slopes of the northeast, especially later in the day. Winds will be strong and gusty.

Gran Canaria

Thick cloud cover in the north and northeast below 1,000 metres, with the chance of some drizzle on the mid-slopes. Elsewhere, a fine, sunny day. Expect highs around 30°C.

Lanzarote

Very cloudy to start the morning, then clear breaks will appear, giving way to sunshine in the southeast. A pleasant 26°C for a maximum. The trade wind will be moderate to strong and locally gusty.

Fuerteventura

Cloudy around dawn, but clearing before midday for a sunny end to the morning. The northeast wind will be moderate, with locally strong gusts in the municipality of Pájara.

La Palma

Clouds dominate the north and northeast, and light drizzle cannot be ruled out, particularly during the late afternoon and evening. Strong to very strong gusts of trade wind are expected in Garafía, El Paso, Mazo, and Fuencaliente.

La Gomera

Clear skies across most of the island, except for the north below 1,000–1,200 metres where cloud will linger. There may be some drizzle there, especially in the afternoon and evening.

El Hierro

Sunny weather overall, though the northern slopes will see more cloud. The trade wind will blow moderate to strong, with very strong gusts on the west coast and along the south and southeast shores.

La Graciosa

Plenty of cloud about, but the temperature will be comfortable, peaking at around 24°C. The northeast wind will blow at 30–40 km/h.
