canary islands weather wednesday may 13

Wednesday: trade winds return, clearing skies

Wednesday: trade winds are back, high clouds on the way out

The anticyclone is strengthening over the Canary Islands, bringing back the familiar trade winds and sweeping away the high cloud cover that lingered earlier in the week. It’s a welcome shift toward more stable conditions, with most islands enjoying a good deal of sunshine by the afternoon.

The morning will still see some high-level clouds, especially over the eastern islands, but these will gradually clear from west to east. The trade winds blow from the northeast — light in the morning, picking up to moderate strength by the afternoon. On the eastern islands, gusts may be a bit stronger.

Temperatures hold steady, with the south of the islands once again reaching above 25°C in some spots. Nights remain cool, and the Atlantic is slightly choppy off northern shores, with waves below 2 metres. Southern coasts stay much calmer, with waves under a metre.

Island by island

Tenerife

The trade winds will be noticeable along the southeast coast and the northwest. Clouds will gather on the northern side, while local afternoon clouds may develop in the mid-elevations of the southeast. The chance of rain is low.

Gran Canaria

Winds will strengthen at the island’s extremities. Low clouds linger in the northeast but won’t bring rainfall; high clouds will dissipate as the day goes on. Temperatures range from 18°C to 22°C.

Lanzarote

Moderate trade winds in the interior and south, with few low clouds — at most a few drifting over the north. High cloud cover will clear by the afternoon. Temperatures between 17°C and 23°C.

Fuerteventura

High cloud cover lingers until midday. Low clouds will appear in the north. In Puerto del Rosario, temperatures range from 17°C to 24°C. Moderate trade winds blowing.

La Palma

A day of low clouds, with local afternoon clouds developing on both the western and eastern sides. An isolated drop of rain can’t be ruled out in the afternoon. Temperatures similar to the rest of the islands.

La Gomera

Leftover high clouds will clear quickly. Sunshine dominates with a few scattered clouds over the centre and south-southwest. Temperatures between 17°C and 23°C.

El Hierro

Fewer high clouds from midday onward. Light low cloud cover remains, and the trade wind will be noticeable. Temperatures range from 11°C to 17°C.

La Graciosa

Cloudy intervals in the morning, clearing by midday as high clouds move out. The wind will pick up during the day. Temperatures similar to Lanzarote’s.
