A Modern Twist on the Traditional Guachinche
In Tenerife, traditional guachinches are reinventing themselves, offering classic Canarian dishes alongside creations not typical of the archipelago. One such place is Guachinche La Maestra, an establishment in the south of the island that wins over lovers of hearty portions with its XXL dishes. Food content creator @elsiciliano_tenerife recently visited and was quick to share the experience with his followers, highlighting the sheer size of the plates. “I found the first place in Tenerife South with XXL food in a guachinche,” he remarked.
Canarian Classics and Hearty Innovations
The restaurant’s menu features various typical Canarian dishes like escaldón de gofio (a thick gofio stew), grilled cheese with honey and gofio, and carne de fiesta (marinated pork). However, the content creator opted for other specialities during his visit. “They have all the starters you can find in Tenerife’s guachinches,” he stated. He began with the XXL cachopo (€23.50), a giant breaded and fried steak filled with Iberian ham and Manchego cheese. “I really like the cheese they use,” commented the TikToker.
He also tried the milanesa (€18), a breaded steak served with tomato, gratin cheese, egg, and cooked ham. In the video, he mentions that on another visit he tried the cordon bleu and “it was very good too.” He emphasises that the portions are so large it’s difficult to finish them. In fact, “we had to take food home,” he said.
Award-Winning Concept and Practical Details
The establishment maintains the essence of traditional Canarian cuisine with typical guachinche dishes but adds different touches to its offerings. This gastronomic approach has been key to its success, earning it first prize as the best modern guachinche in 2024. Located in the Las Chafiras area of San Miguel de Abona, Guachinche La Maestra boasts a 4.4-star rating on Google, reflecting its popularity among those seeking “a modern guachinche” that combines tradition and innovation.
“If you’re looking for a place to eat in the Canarian style with some different dishes in Tenerife South, this could be your spot,” he assures. It is open every day from 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm for lunch and dinner service, while on Sundays it closes earlier at 5:00 pm.
