Saturday: Storm Therese brings heavy rain and gales

Unsettled Saturday with Storm Therese

Storm Therese continues to drive unstable weather across the archipelago this Saturday, 21 March. The main features are persistent, locally heavy rainfall, a risk of thunderstorms, and potentially damaging wind gusts. The Atlantic is rough with a significant ocean swell.

General Outlook

Cloudy intervals will dominate, tending to overcast skies on the more mountainous islands, especially southern and western slopes. Here, rain will be persistent and occasionally heavy. Isolated thunderstorms and small hail cannot be ruled out. In other areas, showers will be less likely. Temperatures see little change overall. A moderate to strong southwesterly wind will bring probable very strong gusts on peaks, southeastern and northwestern slopes, and mid-altitude leeward areas, potentially exceeding 90-100 km/h locally.

At sea, expect a southwesterly wind of force 7 (50-61 km/h). A combined west or northwesterly swell will bring waves of 3-4 metres, except along the west coasts of La Palma and El Hierro where they could surpass 4 metres.
