Playa de Mogán is one of those beaches people come back to year after year. A small crescent of golden sand tucked into the picturesque fishing harbour of Puerto de Mogán — a place that has long earned its nickname as the “little Venice of Gran Canaria”. Colourful houses, canals with footbridges, bougainvillea draped over every balcony — and at the end of it all, calm, warm water without a single wave.
A harbour that looks like a postcard
Puerto de Mogán is the antithesis of the large resorts in southern Gran Canaria. Instead of concrete hotel blocks — low, white houses with colourful doors and shutters. Instead of crowds — the intimate atmosphere of a fishing village that has kept its character despite the tourists. A yacht marina with dozens of boats, canals with footbridges, and restaurants serving fish straight off the boat create an ambiance you won’t find anywhere else on the island.

Mogán’s beach is small — about 200 metres long — but that’s a feature, not a bug. The harbour breakwater completely blocks the waves, creating a natural pool with a gentle entry into the water. The sand is golden and fine (imported, like many Gran Canaria beaches). The water here is exceptionally warm — the sheltered bay traps the sun’s heat like nowhere else on the island.
Who comes here and why
Mogán attracts mainly families with children and couples seeking peace and quiet. No waves, a gentle entry, and the compact size of the beach mean you can safely let the kids out of sight for five minutes. Just behind the beach, a promenade lined with restaurants stretches out — from simple chiringuitos to white-tablecloth venues overlooking the harbour.
On Fridays, Puerto de Mogán hosts one of the best markets on Gran Canaria — a bustling, colourful bazaar with local produce, handicrafts, and Canarian cheeses. It’s worth timing your visit for market day, but be prepared for a more crowded beach.
Getting there and parking
From the GC-1 motorway, take the exit onto GC-500 towards Puerto de Mogán. Parking is free but spaces fill up fast — especially in high season and on Fridays (market day). By Global bus, line 1 from Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés takes about 40 minutes. Boat trips depart from the harbour for dolphin and whale watching, and there’s also a yellow submarine for viewing the underwater world.

Weather at Playa de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán is a charming harbour on Gran Canaria’s southwest coast, often called “Little Venice”. The harbour beach is one of the warmest spots on the island, sheltered from the wind by surrounding cliffs. Check the current weather in Puerto de Mogán.
