Playa de la Arena — the black pearl of Tenerife’s west coast

Playa de la Arena is a small but immaculately maintained beach on Tenerife’s west coast. Black volcanic sand, calm waters and views of the majestic Los Gigantes cliffs — this beach held a Blue Flag for over 30 consecutive years, setting a European record. Compact, family-friendly, and with genuine Canarian character.

Where is Playa de la Arena and how to get there?

The beach is in Puerto de Santiago, in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, on Tenerife’s west coast. It’s roughly 2 km south of Los Gigantes.

By car: From the TF-1 motorway, exit towards Santiago del Teide, then follow the TF-454 to Puerto Santiago. Free street parking in the area — easier to find than on the south coast, but still tricky in high season.

By bus: TITSA line 473 or 477 from Los Cristianos/Costa Adeje. Stop in Puerto Santiago, then a 5-minute walk to the beach.

Beach characteristics

Playa de la Arena is about 140 metres long and 40 metres wide — a compact beach. The sand is black, natural, volcanic — not imported. The water is calm with gentle waves. Lifeguards are on duty in season.

The beach has an exceptional Blue Flag history — it held the award for over 30 consecutive years from 1987, one of the longest unbroken streaks in Europe. The distinction reflects consistently high water quality and facilities.

A major highlight is the view of the Los Gigantes cliffs — sheer rock walls rising over 600 metres above the ocean. Particularly spectacular at sunset.

Good to know

Playa de la Arena is just 2 km from Los Gigantes — one of Tenerife’s most spectacular natural landmarks. The Los Gigantes cliffs tower over 600 metres above the ocean. From the beach you can see them in all their glory, and sunsets with the cliffs as a backdrop are unforgettable.

The water on the west coast is generally cleaner and calmer than on the south coast. Ocean temperature ranges from 20–24 °C year-round. Black volcanic sand heats up more than golden sand — bring flip-flops for the beach.

From Puerto Santiago, whale and dolphin watching boats depart regularly — this is one of the best starting points for these trips on Tenerife. You can also take a boat to see the Los Gigantes cliffs from the sea.
