Playa de Masca — the wild beach at the end of the gorge

Playa de Masca is one of the most remote and spectacular beaches on Tenerife. It lies at the mouth of the famous Barranco de Masca, flanked by towering cliffs. There are no sunbeds, no bars, no parasols — just wild black sand, crystal-clear water, and the feeling that you’ve reached the end of the world. Getting here takes effort, but the reward is worth every step.

How to reach Playa de Masca

This is not a beach you can drive to. There are only two ways to get here:

1. On foot through the Masca Gorge (Barranco de Masca): The trail starts in the village of Masca and descends through the gorge to the beach. The distance is roughly 4.5 km and the descent takes 2.5–3.5 hours. A permit is required — book online at the official website caminobarrancodemasca.com. The fee is around €40 for adults (includes a helmet and insurance). Document and equipment checks are carried out at the trailhead.

2. By boat: Motor boats run from Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago. The trip takes about 20 minutes each way. This option can be combined with the trek — hike down the gorge and return by boat (this is the only permitted option — you are not allowed to walk back up).

Important: The trail is open Wednesday to Saturday. Children under 8 are not allowed. You must wear proper hiking boots — flip-flops and sandals are not permitted.

Beach characteristics

Playa de Masca is a small beach at the base of the cliffs — a mix of dark sand, gravel and stones. The water is clear and turquoise but can be choppy. There are no lifeguards, no sunbeds and no facilities whatsoever. This is a completely wild, undeveloped spot.

The setting is spectacular — sheer gorge walls rise hundreds of metres on either side. According to legend, the bay was once a pirate hideout.
