Hiker Airlifted After Fall on Lanzarote’s Caldera Blanca

Hiker Airlifted from Popular Volcanic Route

A 62-year-old hiker was evacuated by helicopter on Monday, 2nd March 2026, after suffering a fall while walking on the Caldera Blanca route in the municipality of Tinajo, Lanzarote. The incident occurred at 13:14 in an area of difficult terrain, necessitating a complex aerial rescue operation. Upon initial assessment by the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), the woman was found to have sustained a moderate trauma.

Complex Rescue Operation Activated

The alert was received by the Canary Islands Government’s 1-1-2 Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES), which was informed that a hiker had fallen and required medical assistance in a hard-to-reach area of Caldera Blanca. This is one of the most frequented volcanic hiking spots on the island. Given the complexity of the landscape, the 1-1-2 centre immediately activated the necessary emergency resources.

These included a rescue helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), a basic life support ambulance from the SUC, and personnel from the Lanzarote Consortium for Security, Emergencies, Rescue, and Fire Prevention. Coordination between the different teams allowed for a swift response in a natural environment featuring steep slopes, loose rock, and rugged areas.

Aerial Evacuation and Hospital Transfer

The GES helicopter was dispatched to the incident location and, with the assistance of firefighters from the Emergency Consortium, carried out the aerial evacuation of the hiker. The woman was hoisted aboard and transported by air to the vicinity of Lanzarote Airport, where the ground-based medical team was waiting.

Once there, SUC personnel provided initial medical care and proceeded to transfer her by ambulance to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife for further assessment and treatment.
