Owner Offers Reward After €75,000 Yacht Theft
The owner of a luxury yacht moored in Arrecife marina, the capital of Lanzarote, is offering a financial reward for anyone who can locate a British former crew member. The suspect is accused of stealing customised fishing rods and high-end foil boards from the vessel, with the haul valued at 75,000 euros.
International Arrest Warrant Sought
The National Police reported on Friday that the man under investigation for the theft, which was carried out on 8 January, may now be in the United Kingdom. The suspect is believed to have travelled to Lanzarote a day before the crime via a ferry from Cádiz. As a result, police have forwarded the results of their investigation to the relevant judicial authority so that an international arrest warrant can be issued.
Meticulous Theft and Flight Reconstructed
In order to steal the personalised fishing rods and foil boards—specialised aquatic platforms designed to lift above the water on a hydrofoil—the accused tried to cover his tracks. He acted in the early hours and concealed the French licence plate of the rental car he used to travel to the island from Cádiz.
An analysis of traffic camera footage from various points across Lanzarote allowed investigators to reconstruct his escape route towards Costa Teguise. This evidence led, on 6 February, to the identification of this 49-year-old man as the alleged perpetrator of the theft from the yacht, which was berthed at pontoon H in Arrecife marina.
Suspect Fled Island Immediately
Officers, who are keeping the case open, have determined that the suspect gained access to the yacht by climbing over one of the locks. The day after committing the robbery, without having stayed in any hotel, he left Lanzarote.
US-Based Owner Seeks Information
The yacht’s owner, a resident of the United States, has posted on social media offering a financial reward—the exact amount has not been specified in the police report—for anyone who provides relevant information leading to the clarification of the facts. The police highlight in their statement that this could strengthen the push for a private prosecution in court.
